Mid-morning, on my way back home from remote areas of the desert, I spotted a herd among striped hills. The sky was overcast, and the streaks of rain in the distance threatened to make the roads impassable. I paused for a few hours while the herd finished their nap and made their way up mounds. A favorite bachelor stallion of mine, Ranger, finished the climb to the flats and paused. For a brief moment, he showed off his namesake: looking out over the hills as if he could see back in time. The hills of sediment he stood on had been deposited by an old river approximately 13,000 to 10,000 years before, when his ancient relatives would have ranged much lusher lands. Perhaps in another 10,000 years, the descendants of the wild horse will pause in the same spot.

Snow days are an absolute treasure and winter is by far my favorite season in the desert. There is nothing like the anticipation of waking up to a freshly transformed world of snow and mist, hoping you’ll be lucky enough to see horses. And then, once you find horses, asking for the slightest opening in the clouds that will bathe them in a soft light. This piece invokes the excitement of a single horse cresting a ridge right as the morning light makes an appearance; for a brief moment, everything falls into place. Then, the stallion moves on towards more pressing goals and the clouds roll back in. By late afternoon, the snow coating the sage and bunch grass is gone.
